Until recently local business listings on Google were managed through Google + and Google Places. This was a confusing platform for small business owners and SEO companies when it came to managing listings.
Thankfully, this has now been replaced with Google My Business, which is easier to use and has updated business information.
It’s free to add or claim your business listing on Google My Business. With a business listing your business will appear on Google Maps, Google Search and other Google properties.
This will naturally mean more exposure if you appear at the top of Google SERPS Local Map Pack:
With a local listing on Google My Business, you can reach new customers in your local area and make it easier for them to find you, meaning this is an opportunity worth taking advantage of for any business with a physical location. The benefits of using Google My Business are:
Why Google My Business?
- It’s 100% free to add or claim your business
- Stand out with a local listing in local search results
- Have your business hours and phone number show up in Google Search
- Display directions to your business address on Google Maps and Google Search
- Check your business information is accurate and up to date
- Respond to reviews and build a local fan base
- Upload videos and pictures of your business
- Manage multiple business locations from a single account
How to start with Google My Business
To sign up for Google My Business you can register at https://www.google.com/business/. You will need to create an account with Google first if you don’t have one already. Otherwise, you can just log in to an existing Google account and add your business information. You will need to add your business name, address, phone number and business category.
You will need to verify that your business is located at the address specified, so Google will send you a verification code in the post. When the letter arrives follow the instructions and login to your Google My Business account to confirm the verification code and complete your Google My Business listing. The letter can take 1-2 weeks to arrive and your business will appear unverified during this time period.
Inside your Google My Business account be sure to update any additional business information such as special opening hours. You can also link Google My Business listing to your website if you have one.
PRO TIP: Take time to review your business listing information with other directories online such as Yell or Thompson Local, because Google will check NAP (name, address, phone number) citations for accuracy.
