k.labs
A custom WordPress theme for the creative entrepreneurial business community in Bournemouth.
Project Overview
Kindred Labs is a boutique open-plan co-working space for creative businesses. If you want to be a part of the creative business community in Bournemouth, then k.labs is the place to be.
We met Grant at the Factory Studios where we rented our first office space, he had been working from home since selling his design agency business and told everyone at the studios he was fed up of talking to himself and visiting the fridge too often. It was here that Grant was inspired to start the journey of his own creative co-working business and he later approached us to create a website that reflected the beauty of his new building k.labs and the story behind its development.
Digital Mad delivered a bespoke WordPress theme with full-screen carousel, image gallery, events listing and journal, with modular page builder and CMS training allowing k.labs to update new resident profiles and events.

Identifying the audience
We led a discovery workshop with k.labs to plan out the user journey and target audience. The majority of users accessing this website would be small business owners, working from home, seeking workspaces to hire within the creative community. It was therefore important that the website provided information on membership packages and pricing that was clear and easy to access.
As business professionals would be using the website and sharing the same workspace, there needed to be a residents section allowing website visitors to see who is based at k.labs and what they do, as well as give the residents an opportunity to promote their own creative businesses and services within the community.
Mobile-first design
The website design was focused on mobile devices first, as we knew most of the users accessing the website would be using these handheld devices. It was therefore important the content was accessible and easy to read when scrolling.
We created a mobile-first full-screen menu that allows users to navigate the website pages. The content was prioritised to fit on small screen devices during the design phase, ensuring the most important content could be found quickly at the top of each page.
Telling the story
k.labs had taken photography during the refurbishment and wanted to publish an online journal with updates showcasing each phase of the project. For this we created a modular page builder with simple text and image blocks, allowing k.labs to upload their own content that tells the story behind the 1930s office building development.
Resident profiles
As new residents would be arriving at k.labs workspace the website required a CMS so the team can update resident profiles. For this, we created a custom post type in the WordPress theme called "Residents" where website administrators can log in and manage all profiles in a central location.
Adding a WordPress custom post type for residencies gives functionality for each resident to have their own profile page and URL on the k.labs website:
WordPress CMS training
We visited k.labs at their new workspace for a website handover and to provide on-site training within the WordPress CMS. The majority of website administration tasks such as profile and event management are now handled internally by the k.labs team.
